21 Days of Downsizing – Day 12

Welcome to my 21 day series of downsizing my NYC shoebox apartment for a move to Australia! Alex + I have already downsized about 70% of our belongings, but I’ve got some “on the fence” items from my closet and I could use a bit of help!

If you know me well, you know that while I’ve come around on downsizing my fashuun, I will *gulp* NEVER downsize my stuffed animals. Cuz #crazystuffedanimallady

So, tune in to help me decide what closet items to keep or not to keep! Simultaneously, I’ll introduce you to one of my stuffed animal friends, cuz I could NEVER downsize them!

Day 12 – Changing Lanes

Meet Beatrice.

Beatrice often closed her eyes and imagined herself jumping backwards into a flower bush in the open air. She craved that thrill of anticipation and that moment of letting go.

While life was far from mundane, Beatrice only knew a small piece of burlap fabric that housed her family of 25 bunny siblings at the infamous Ximending Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan. Every night, she and her siblings sat at ground level, observing the shoe choices of passers-by.

Curly laced neon green tennis shoes with orange socks. Plaid heeled rain boots paired with stirrups. Gummy pink ballet flats with air vents.  It was a lot of grime at varying tempos of strides. Pieces of tianbula would fall off their toothpick skewers while droplets of beer, sugar cane drink and bubble tea created new road atmospheres for the soles strolling by.

The bunny siblings would often take a little nap, falling asleep to the humdrum of hawkers calling out their specials, friends chitter chattering and mopeds cruising through. When fast footsteps became slower and slower with an approaching scent of fried chicken, all the bunnies would simultaneously wake up at the very rallentando of steps.

Passers-by would become potential bunny shoppers! So when Alex’s and Christina’s footsteps reached a halt in front of the bunny vendor, Beatrice grinned back at them eagerly, her smile extra wide.

Beatrice’s grin grew even wider as her new owners hailed a cab, hopped in a souped up WRX and zoomed away.

It was the ultimate letting go. Away from her siblings. Away from the scraps of food. Away from her tiny sardine-packed burlap home.

Beatrice never wanted to forget the thrill of that evening.

She felt like a new bunny and decided henceforth to go by the name Trix.
